There are four simple steps you can take right now to start preparing for your baby’s arrival.

Find out what your options are

Even if you have an idea in your head of what your life as a working parent is going to look like, it’s still good to explore your options.

There are now so many different ways you can take your parental leave. New legislation means parents can now share up to 20 weeks’ of paid parental leave between them (with each parent required to take at least two weeks). In addition, leave is now completely flexible to allow parents to claim multiple blocks of paid parental leave until their child turns two between them.

You might also want to see what your employer offers new parents, be that leave entitlements, or flexible work options.

Remember, there are lots of options available to you as a dad. Sometimes it’s just a matter of asking.

Check your wellbeing

Having a baby is a major life transition for dads. It's really normal to have mixed feelings, even if you are really excited about having a baby.

If those feelings are starting to bother you or you're feeling overwhelmed, it can be helpful to know when you might need a bit of extra help. You can measure your wellbeing by setting up a profile and doing a confidential, anonymous self-assessment. It'll just help you know where you stand and what you can do to stay well.
